Frequently Asked Q&As
These are the questions I get asked most, along with the answers.
How long does a cake take to make and decorate?
Every cake is individual and takes a different amount of time to create. There’s time to design it, to bake the cake itself, and of course, lots of time to do the decorations. I usually allow at least a week to get everything sorted out for your indiidual cake. It’s crucial to book your cake as early as possible.
I want to keep the flower or character decoration from the cake you made me - what’s the best way to preserve it?
The decorations are all made from sugar paste icing - so if they don’t get eaten they can be kept with a little care: keep them dry and dust free - although they’ll happily sit on a dry shelf or in a drawer, they are very delicate. Scrumpled kitchen roll to stop them bouncing around in a small tin with a tight lid is ideal. you should certainly make sure they are absolutely dry before sealing up - a few days in an airing cupboard is a good idea.
How many servings does this size cake provide?
When you order your cake I’ll discuss how many people you wish to serve. Generally the smaller you cut the pieces, the more people get a nibble, though.
How much does a cake cost?
Each cake is individual and priced accordingly. I never give an quote or estimate until I completely understand what our requirements are and have assessed how much work is involved.
What information do you need to help design the cake I want?
I will discuss what you want to have created and what or who it’s for. As each cake is individual this is an essential phase. If you’re stuck for ideas then I’ll give you plenty to take away and think about - but make sure you look at all the examples on this website.
I’ll need to know when you want the cake - to make sure there’s enough time available to devote to creating the perfect cake for you, and how many people are you feeding. Remember, if you are feeding more people than a single cake will cater for I will happily make you additional “cutting cakes’ with matching icing, just right to provide all those extra portions.
Do you deliver the cake?
I find that most customers like to pick up their own cakes. Cakes are boxed and packed for careful transportation. Keep the box low down in your car, and pack the box with a blanket to stop it rolling across the floor or boot. However, I can deliever locally by arrangement.
Where are you based?
My kitchen is just south of Dorking, Surrey, UK.
Do your cakes contain nuts?
Chocolate and Maderia recipes do not contain nuts, however, the cakes are made in a kitchen that definitely does use nuts regularly. The cakes should not be served to anyone with a nut allergy.
